Definition of Seismic Supports

Building electromechanical seismic resistance refers to the seismic design of mechanical and electrical facilities such as pipes, air ducts, and cable trays. Before the national standard was issued, the protection of mechanical and electrical facilities relied on load-bearing support systems, which mainly served to bear loads and basically did not consider design, posing significant hidden dangers to system safety. The measures and technologies specified in the "Code for Seismic Design of Mechanical and Electrical Equipment in Buildings" are defined as seismic support systems; based on load mechanics, they firmly connect pipes, air ducts, cable trays, and other mechanical and electrical facilities to the building structure that has been seismically designed, limiting displacement of auxiliary mechanical and electrical engineering facilities, controlling facility vibration, and transferring loads to various components or devices on the load-bearing structure. The main purpose of seismic support is safety, that is, to minimize the loss of life and property caused by earthquakes. In layman's terms, this type of product is also called seismic bracing and hanger.

 

Development of Seismic Supports

After the 5.12 Wenchuan earthquake, the Ministry of Construction urgently revised the original GB50011-2001 "Code for Seismic Design of Buildings" twice and issued the new GB50981-2014 "Code for Seismic Design of Mechanical and Electrical Equipment in Buildings", requiring strict implementation of its mandatory provisions to achieve the basic spirit of the code: "No collapse in major earthquakes, repairable in moderate earthquakes, and no cracking in minor earthquakes", maximizing the protection of people's lives and property. Relevant institutions and experts also began to respond to national needs and started to formulate relevant standards to meet the practical needs of engineering electromechanical systems. On October 9, 2014, the Ministry of Housing and Urban-Rural Development officially issued the "Code for Seismic Design of Mechanical and Electrical Equipment in Buildings" as a national standard, numbered GB50981-2014, with mandatory implementation from August 1, 2015. The national standard comprehensively elaborates the basic requirements for seismic design measures, mainly applicable to mechanical and electrical engineering facilities such as building water supply and drainage, heating, ventilation and air conditioning, gas, thermal pipelines, electricity, communication, and fire protection. After seismic fortification, it reduces earthquake damage, prevents secondary disasters, and plays a safe and reliable role in reducing casualties and economic losses.

 

National Standards

In the face of natural earthquake disasters, what we can do is to minimize damage and losses. To this end, the state has put forward higher requirements for building seismic resistance. The national standard GB50981-2014 "Code for Seismic Design of Mechanical and Electrical Equipment in Buildings", implemented on August 1, 2015, is formulated to implement the "Building Law of the People's Republic of China" and the "Earthquake Prevention and Disaster Reduction Law of the People's Republic of China", implement the policy of focusing on prevention, and ensure that mechanical and electrical engineering facilities such as building water supply and drainage, heating, ventilation, air conditioning, gas, thermal, electrical communication, and fire protection, after seismic fortification, reduce earthquake damage, prevent secondary disasters, avoid casualties, reduce economic losses, and achieve safety, reliability, advanced technology, economic rationality, and convenient maintenance and management.

Mandatory Provisions of the National Standard:

In the national standard GB50981-2014 "Code for Seismic Design of Mechanical and Electrical Equipment in Buildings" implemented on August 1, 2015, Clauses 1.0.4, 5.1.4, and 7.4.6 are mandatory and must be strictly implemented. The mandatory provision in Clause 1.0.4 of the national "Code for Seismic Design of Mechanical and Electrical Equipment in Buildings" stipulates that "mechanical and electrical engineering in buildings in areas with seismic fortification intensity of 6 degrees or above must undergo seismic design"; the specific requirements for building mechanical and electrical specialties are as follows:

Water Supply and Drainage Specialty

For indoor water supply, hot water, and fire protection pipes with a diameter greater than or equal to DN65, when fixed with hangers, supports, or brackets, seismic supports should be installed.

HVAC Specialty

1. Pipes in boiler rooms, refrigeration rooms, and heat exchange stations should have reliable lateral and longitudinal seismic supports.

2. Air ducts with a rectangular cross-sectional area greater than or equal to 0.38㎡ and circular ducts with a diameter greater than or equal to 0.70m can use seismic bracing and hangers.

3. Smoke exhaust ducts, emergency ventilation ducts, and related equipment should use seismic bracing and hangers.

4. Equipment such as air conditioning units and fans with a weight greater than 1.8kN should not be installed by suspension; when suspension is necessary, they should be avoided above areas where people move and evacuate, and seismic bracing and hangers should be installed.

Gas

Gas pipes with an inner diameter greater than or equal to 25mm should undergo seismic design.

Electrical

1. Electrical conduits with an inner diameter not less than 60mm and cable trays, wire troughs, and busways with a weight not less than 150N/m should undergo seismic fortification.

2. Shared antennas installed on building roofs should adopt safety protection measures to prevent equipment or its components from falling and injuring people due to earthquakes.

 

Support Systems

Kangmeifeng Seismic Bracing and Hanger Design

GB50981-2014 "Code for Seismic Design of Mechanical and Electrical Equipment in Buildings" (hereinafter referred to as the "Code") specifies the seismic requirements for equipment specialties such as water supply and drainage, HVAC, gas, and electrical, and provides specific design methods for seismic bracing and hangers. For pipeline equipment with large weight or involving life safety, the "Code" requires seismic design and the use of seismic bracing and hangers.

The spacing of seismic bracing and hangers for specialties such as ventilation, water, and electrical should be selected according to Table 8.2.3 of the "Code".

The spacing of comprehensive seismic supports and hangers should take the minimum value of the spacing of seismic supports and hangers for each specialty.

3. Detailed Drawings of Seismic Supports and Hangers

Select seismic supports and hangers according to the building structure type and pipeline loads.

Select products according to the Kangmeifeng seismic bracing and hanger system.

4. Layout of Supports and Hangers

The layout of supports and hangers should be determined according to Sections 8.2 and 8.3 of the "Code".
